LNG Supplies for Asian Markets Conference (LNGA 2012)

LNG production is entering a period of lower growth as the expansion of Qatar’s liquefaction capacity comes to an end and before new projects under construction in Australia come on-stream. Demand remains strong as Japan imports more LNG to help it overcome the shortfall in output from its nuclear power plants because of the Fukushima crisis, imports into India and China increase rapidly and new buyers emerge in South East Asia, the Middle East and South America. A tightening of the LNG supply/demand balance is inevitable and will have an impact on both LNG trade flows and pricing. With seven projects now under construction and more to follow, Australia has the potential to overtake Qatar as the world’s largest producer but can its projects be delivered on time and on budget?

Attention is now turning to the USA and Canada as the next new source of supply. Nine export projects have already been announced. Asia is likely to be one of the main target markets but how many of the projects will be built and how will Asian buyers respond to the opportunity to purchase LNG from North America? Will the recent gas discoveries offshore East Africa open a new supply opportunity for Asia and if so how quickly can they be developed? What is the future for floating liquefaction after Shell’s order for unit for its Prelude field offshore Australia? What will be the long-term impact of the Fukushima nuclear crisis on LNG demand in Japan and in other Asian countries? How much LNG do China and India need and will they be prepared to pay the prices needed to support investment in new projects? How quickly will LNG imports into South East Asia increase? Will Singapore become a trading hub and provide a basis for pricing LNG in Asia? Is the oil-price linkage in long-term contracts in Asia here to stay or could we see a move to a new pricing approach? What will be the impact of shale gas in Asia?
